Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Benefits include restoring appearance, allowing for a normal diet, improved self-esteem, clear speech, and better digestion. Advances in dentistry have made dentures more natural-looking and comfortable. Two types are available, and regular check-ups with the dentist are necessary for proper fit and adjustments.
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing. Complete dentures can be either “conventional” or “immediate“.
Conventional Dentures
This type of denture is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, a conventional denture is ready for placement in the mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.
Immediate dentures
Immediate dentures are a type of denture that can be placed immediately after natural teeth are removed. This means the patient does not have to go without teeth during the healing period. However, due to the shrinkage of bones and gums that occurs during healing, these dentures may require frequent adjustments to fit properly and are typically considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.
Partial Dentures:
A removable partial denture or bridge typically includes replacement teeth attached to a plastic base that matches the color of the gums. The base is connected to a metal framework that keeps the denture in place. These types of dentures are used when some natural teeth still remain in the jaw. They fill in the gaps caused by missing teeth and prevent remaining teeth from shifting. A precision partial denture is removable and has internal attachments that are not visible, giving it a more natural appearance compared to one that uses clasps to attach to adjacent crowns.
Flexible Dentures
Flexible partial dentures, like Valplast® Flexible Partial, offer comfort, aesthetics, and affordability. It is traditionally thought that removable partial dentures must be rigid to be effective, but the Valplast® Flexible Partial is designed to adapt to the movement and flexibility in the mouth. This innovative type of denture is made of a flexible material that is both strong and lightweight, providing comfort and a natural appearance.
